1-Week-Old
How your baby's growing
Your newborn's still adjusting to his new world, which he may find a bit noisy and well-lit for his taste. But he's getting used to it. You'll notice his limbs move in a jerky, uncoordinated way but soon, probably by the end of the month, his movements will become more fluid as his muscle control matures.

Is your newborn a noisy breather? Lots of air passing through very small airways clogged with lint from blankets, clothing, and dust could be the culprit. You probably don't need to worry; he isn't likely to have a cold at this young age.

How your life's changing
If you're breastfeeding, chances are that you're still trying to get the hang of it this week. Mums often wonder if their baby is getting enough milk.

One tip: Baby feeds every two to three hours, or at least eight times in 24 hours for the first two to three weeks.

Parent tip: Natural remedy to increase lactation
"I found drinking a mixture of saunf (fennel seeds) and ajwain (carom seeds) in water increased lactation tremendously. Boil one teaspoon of saunf and one teaspoon of ajwain in a litre of water -- cool it and drink at room temperature. Not only does it increase milk production, these herbs are digestive and help in preventing colic in babies."

Immunisations in the first week
Vaccinations provide immunity against life-threatening diseases. Some vaccines are mandatory under the National Immunization Schedule. In the first week, your paediatrician will give your baby the polio vaccine, which is given orally, and the BCG and the Hepatitis B vaccines which are both given by injection.

Things to consider
You're likely to meet your baby's doctor this week or next. At your first visit she usually examines your baby and gives you a copy of your Personal Child Health Record, which will contain your baby's screening and vaccination notes, growth details and helpful advice.

You have 30 days from the birth to register your baby but most hospitals do it as a routine. Remember to ask for the baby’s birth certificate before leaving the hospital.

My new born baby has lost weight instead of gaining weight. Is it OK?
It is normal for babies to lose 5-8% of their birth weight in the initial week. They will regain most of it by the time they are two or three weeks old. Further, babies are born with extra fluid and this fluid is lost in the first few days of life.

My son has long nails and he keeps scratching his face. When do I clip his nails?
It is safer to cover your son's hands with soft cotton baby mittens till he is a couple of weeks older. However, if you feel confident, trim away only the overgrown nails with a pair of small blunt scissors. Take care to ensure that you don't cut nails too short. It is better to avoid a baby nail trimmer as you can easily cut very close to the skin and draw blood.
